VetNet Hosts SEAL Team Premiere Community Event and Panel

ViacomCBS VetNet closed out November with a bang by screening a sneak peek of the Season 4 CBS SEAL Team premiere. The full episode premieres Wednesday, December 2 at 9/8c on CBS and CBS All Access, but our ViacomCBS VetNet military and veteran community enjoyed early access. After a riveting cliffhanger, VetNet Chief Veteran Officer Richard Jones shared his gratitude with the cast and crew of SEAL Team for helping publicize military stories and for keeping ViacomCBS on the cutting edge of nuanced and authentic storytelling. Sheryl Underwood, of CBS The Talk, an Air Force Veteran herself and VetNet Ambassador, moderated the following panel discussion between SEAL Team cast and crew; Toni Trucks, David Boreanaz, Tyler Grey, and Mark Owen.

Toni spoke about the challenges of learning military jargon, as a civilian, and the pride she takes in being a role model for women of color who might have an interest in future service.Tyler spoke about being true to life in the portrayal of Military and Veteran Culture, so the public has a grounded sense of verisimilitude. He said he was proudest of the honesty of the show. David Boreanaz spoke of his charity interests with The Headstrong Project and the USO, and his pride in giving back to the military and veteran community through his participation and fundraising efforts. Mark spoke of the importance of veterans being involved with every aspect of production, and in every creative endeavor so that authenticity is paramount. He also shared of a wonderful event in which Gold Star mothers came and spoke with the SEAL Team writers.

When asked how the military transition into Hollywood was, Veteran Mark Owen said, “It’s easier getting shot at on deployment,” to a good laugh. Tyler Grey, also a veteran, followed up with advice to figure out and deeply understand the status quo and the system before trying to change it: assess and understand. VetNet hopes our event attendees will take the lessons learned from the panel to work towards their dreams.

It’s clear that it’s not just the characters who have each other’s backs, but the whole cast and crew that supports the show itself. ViacomCBS Veterans Network was proud to host this screening for our Veteran and Military Community, and we are grateful to Mark, Tyler, Toni, David, and Sheryl for participating in our panel, and of course to our Chief Veteran Officer, Rich Jones, for his opening and closing remarks.
